THE JOURNEYMAN
Finally a place I can call my own. To
think that I won't be using this to vent and rant about my ordeals in
making a documentary for someone else would be a far cry from the
truth. After all, who am I really kidding here, it's my personal
sandbox and entirely appropriate to share what I had to go through to
make a documentary on the state of homelessness in Kitchener-Waterloo
area. To begin with I thought I had learnt my lesson after a failed
attempt on being overly ambitious last time on covering Ontario's
spending woes, on their conservation initiatives. After finding out
how difficult it can be to get a government agency to concede that
they are not up to the task, or worse not willing to correct
themselves, I decided on concentrating on a local issue.
That brings me to my desire to get to
know my surroundings better. I had moved to Kitchener this year on a
temporary basis to get closer to my college and concentrate cent
percent on what I had set myself to do this year – become an
independent producer of video content. In the course of my transition
to this city, I started volunteering at the Cambridge Bridges
Shelter. It didn't take long, to realize that this area like others
did not escape the major downsizing from the gutting of the
manufacturing sector. In respect to Kitchener's population, their is
a sizeable amount of people who are now left with temporary shelters
and no place to stay at night. This obviously is a huge problem and
social concern, when you consider the freezing temperatures we have
here in Canada. But what did end up warming my heart, was the kind
spirit of the community to band together to make sure no man, women,
child was left unattended and without care. This is where my journey
began...
