Connections made and lessons learnt
On a personal level I learnt so much about how smaller communities
have a sense of fraternity and are active participants in helping
their community prosper. I was blown away by how many volunteers came
out for the Ray of Hope event, on the coldest night of the year.
Their were families with children, but they were determined to show
their support for the cause. Till this day I get phone calls from
different people to come cover events. In fact, today I will be going
out all night to cover the strip the Streets event. So now you
understand what I meant that for the purposes of a course my
documentary was complete, but in reality I had just scratched the
surface.
Also, if you consider that my goal this year was to create visual
content, I truly succeeding in doing so, while not compromising on my
personal goals to help fellow students succeed. This year alone I
had contributed upwards of 2 dozen stories, either producing them,
editing, writing, reporting or shooting them. Helped complete 6
documentaries/features. Came runners up in the Berlin short film
festival and finally chased down an internship of my choice at the
CBC. This was a major feat for me, as it is quite difficult and
competitive to get into the CBC.
Finally I have realized that this field requires personal commitment
and initiative to get things done, and I am on my way to producing a
television show for Vision TV in the fall season. This has been a
gruelling year, with personal sacrifices, financial burdens and great
tests of strength, but in the end its helped me understand what
mettle I am made of. And I know I can endure the obstacles thrown at
me, because the passion within me runs deep inside.
