Hardships
Life throws you a curve ball.
So here I am having put over a hundred hours into something I think
is a fascinating topic and perhaps something I can help better
someone, but then I start my editing and find out I have no direction
in my documentary. At this point, I really wish I had written a
script and approached this like a film, and not some impromptu,
follow your heart project. After combing through 8 hours of raw
footage, I decided that this is a huge piece that should and will be
done at a later time but to satisfy the needs of my instructor an 8
minute short is all that was required. After talking to the
instructor, and basically being told that I should follow the story
of one individual, and only that would comply with his requirements
and anything short would result in a fail, I was left with no choice.
I started editing with a heavy heart
and perhaps that shows in my edit. More so, I had to go back to
Stratford now, to interview the father of the individual who had
kicked his son on the streets. If that wasn't hard enough to
interview someone you don't know, I was given clear instructions on
what I can ask and how much time I had at their house. Despite all
these restrictions, I am quite proud of being able to candidly
explain what I was doing and being able to get what I wanted from the
interview. Minus some more action shots, which ended up costing me
quite despairing in the end. All's well that ends well, 24 hours of
editing and a bit of bitterness left for abandoning my hard work
resulted in something I say suffices for JRN 8090, but nothing else..
Here's the piece to see for your self.
